“Psaligraphy,” derived from the Greek “psallos” (to cut) and “graphia” (to write or draw), is the art of crafting intricate designs by cutting out material. This method emphasizes the interplay between removed sections and what’s left behind, producing expressive and detailed imagery or patterns.
About Me
Welcome to Psaligrafia! My name is Vera Pavlova. My journey into art began with a degree in Fine Arts and a background in stage and costume design. Inspired by the legacy of Burano’s lace, I began to experiment with papercutting. The act of cutting into paper to create elaborate designs from the interplay of removed material and what remains has become a new form of expression for me.
Technique
At Psaligrafia, I explore the art of negative spaces through a unique papercutting technique. By crafting one-of-a-kind custom dies with the technique of photo-etching and using them with a hand-cranked press, I transform forgotten pieces of paper into intricate, lace-like ornaments. These delicate creations, reminiscent of tassels, form the foundation of my hanging pieces. Suspended with care and arranged strategically, they utilize gravity to craft dynamic and captivating compositions.
Upcycling and Recycling
Sustainability is at the heart of my artistic practice. I take pride in upcycling precious discarded paper and recycling the cutouts generated during the papercutting process. Each piece tells a story of transformation and renewal, preserving the environment while creating something beautiful.
